Did the ancient Egyptian pregnancy test actually work?

Partly. An Egyptian papyrus of around 1350 BCE describes a woman watering two bags of seed, barley and emmer wheat, with her own urine: if anything sprouted she was pregnant. When researchers tested the method in the 1960s it flagged pregnancy correctly in roughly 70% of cases, most likely because raised hormone levels in the urine of a pregnant woman encourage germination. The second half of the rule, in which barley sprouting first meant a boy and emmer a girl, performed no better than chance.

Why did the Maya consider crossed eyes beautiful?

Among the Classic Maya elite, gently crossed eyes were an admired mark of beauty and rank, and colonial-era accounts describe parents hanging a small bead or ball of resin from a child's fringe so the eyes would train inward on it. It sat alongside other deliberate modifications: infants' skulls were bound between padded boards to produce the long sloping forehead associated with the maize god, and adults had their front teeth filed and inlaid with small discs of jade or pyrite. The beautiful body was something a family built over a lifetime.

How tall was the Egyptian grid used to draw the human body?

Eighteen squares, measured from the soles of the feet to the hairline, with fixed landmarks: the knee at square 6, the buttocks at 9, the elbow at 12 and the shoulders at 16. Ruled red grid lines still survive on unfinished tomb walls. Because the canon was taught and enforced, Egyptian figures separated by a thousand years look like close relatives. In the Late Period the system was reset to 21 squares, which lets art historians date work by the change.

The seeds only sprouted for women who were not pregnant

It predicted the baby's sex, but not the pregnancy

Carried a small flask of oil for the skin

The mixed sweat, oil and dust scraped from their skin

Sand from beneath their sandals

In early Confucian teaching, cutting your own hair was a serious matter. Why?

Body, hair and skin came from one's parents, and damaging them broke a duty

Hair was believed to hold a person's memories

Cutting hair was thought to shorten a life by one year
